Magnetic tracks: why choose them?
How a magnetic track works, which modules to choose, recessed or surface-mounted, and how to size the power supply for your installation.

One track, modules that clip on
A magnetic track is an aluminium profile, fixed to the ceiling or recessed into it, supplied with extra-low voltage (48 V DC) by a dedicated power supply. The light fittings, called modules, are held in place by magnets and connect simply by contact: you can add, move or replace them without tools, anywhere along the track (switch off the power before handling them, as most manufacturers require).
That is the secret of its success: the lighting keeps pace with the way the room changes. A painting moves, a table is shifted, a counter is extended? You slide a spotlight along or add a linear module, without touching the ceiling.
The modules and what they do
| Module | Effect | For |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable spotlight | Directed beam | Painting, table, product in a display window |
| Linear | Diffuse, even light | General lighting, office, corridor |
| Laser or grille | Small, very precise points of light, with low glare | Discreet accents, low ceilings |
| Round panel | Soft downward light | General light for one area |
| Corner (L) | Light that follows a turn in the track | Room corners, L shapes |
“CCT” modules also let you choose the colour temperature, from warm white to a more neutral white, depending on the time of day or the use.
Recessed, surface-mounted or suspended
- Recessed into a plasterboard suspended ceiling: the track sits flush, for the cleanest look. It has to be planned before the ceiling goes up.
- Surface-mounted, screwed to an existing concrete ceiling: ideal for renovations, with no plastering work.
- Suspended on cables below a high ceiling: the light comes down to the right level, above an island or a counter.
Sizing the power supply
Add up the wattage of all the modules, then keep a margin of about 20%. For example:
- 6 spotlights of 10 W = 60 W.
- 2 linear modules of 40 W = 80 W.
- Total: 140 W, or about 170 W with the margin: a 300 W power supply leaves room to add modules later.
Put the power supply somewhere accessible and ventilated (a suspended ceiling with an access hatch, a technical cupboard). For a long track or several circuits, plan several feed points and suitable connectors: straight, corner or flexible.
Choosing the right range
Magnetic tracks come in several ranges, and modules from one range only fit tracks from the same range. In our catalogue, for example, “Slim” modules fit “Slim” tracks and “CCT” modules fit “CCT” tracks. Choose your range at the outset and keep to it throughout the house: ask us for the list of compatible components.
- Define the areas to light and the effect you want in each one.
- Choose recessed, surface-mounted or suspended to suit the ceiling.
- Mix linear modules (general light) and spotlights (accents).
- Add up the wattages + 20% to size the power supply.
- A single range for both tracks and modules.
Where can you install a magnetic track?
Living and dining rooms, open-plan kitchens, corridors and offices, but also shops, showrooms, galleries and restaurants: anywhere the layout changes, or where you want precise light and an uncluttered ceiling. Our Marrakech showroom is fitted with them: come and see the modules switched on.

Frequently asked questions
Is a magnetic track safe?
Yes: it runs on extra-low voltage (48 V DC), provided by a dedicated power supply. The power supply itself must be connected to the mains by an electrician.
Can you mix modules from different ranges or brands?
No. Even within the same brand, modules from one range only fit tracks from that range. Choose one range and stick with it.
Recessed or surface-mounted?
Recessed into a suspended ceiling for the cleanest look, to be planned before the works; surface-mounted on an existing ceiling, with no plastering work.
